What Is Life?<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>

Let\u2019s begin with the obvi\u00adous: you\u2019re alive. Con\u00adgrat\u00adu\u00adla\u00adtions. You\u2019ve made it at least this far, which\u2014statistically speaking\u2014already sets you apart from a vast num\u00adber of missed oppor\u00adtu\u00adni\u00adties at the very begin\u00adning of your exis\u00adtence.<\/p>

But what does it actu\u00adal\u00adly mean to be alive?<\/p>

Is it the way your cof\u00adfee goes cold just as you remem\u00adber it? The qui\u00adet real\u00adiza\u00adtion that your gym mem\u00adber\u00adship remains large\u00adly sym\u00adbol\u00adic? Or is it some\u00adthing deep\u00ader?<\/p>

Sci\u00adence offers a def\u00adi\u00adn\u00adi\u00adtion: life grows, repro\u00adduces, responds to stim\u00aduli, and main\u00adtains home\u00adosta\u00adsis.<\/p>

Tech\u00adni\u00adcal\u00adly pre\u00adcise. Not espe\u00adcial\u00adly illu\u00admi\u00adnat\u00ading.<\/p>

Plants are alive, yet they do not wor\u00adry about their car\u00adbon foot\u00adprint. Bac\u00adte\u00adria are alive, yet they do not curate online iden\u00adti\u00adties. Humans, meanwhile\u2014equipped with self-awareness\u2014spend a remark\u00adable amount of time won\u00adder\u00ading whether they are liv\u00ading their \u201cbest life,\u201d while simul\u00adta\u00adne\u00adous\u00adly search\u00ading for instruc\u00adtions on how to fold a fit\u00adted sheet.<\/p>

Phi\u00adlos\u00ado\u00adphy does not sim\u00adpli\u00adfy mat\u00adters.<\/p>

Exis\u00adten\u00adtial\u00adists argue that mean\u00ading is some\u00adthing we cre\u00adate ourselves\u2014an idea that is both lib\u00ader\u00adat\u00ading and slight\u00adly unset\u00adtling. Reli\u00adgions offer struc\u00adtured answers, though con\u00adsen\u00adsus remains elu\u00adsive. And sci\u00adence, for all its rig\u00ador, ulti\u00admate\u00adly describes mech\u00ada\u00adnisms rather than mean\u00ading.<\/p>

So what is life?<\/p>

It is, per\u00adhaps, the strange con\u00addi\u00adtion of being con\u00adscious at all. A self-aware organ\u00adism on a mov\u00ading plan\u00adet, assign\u00ading impor\u00adtance to fleet\u00ading moments. It is the small victories\u2014keeping a plant alive, remem\u00adber\u00ading an appointment\u2014and the equal\u00adly small absur\u00addi\u00adties that accom\u00adpa\u00adny them.<\/p>

In the end, life may be less about defin\u00ading it and more about expe\u00adri\u00adenc\u00ading it.<\/p>

It unfolds while plans are made, revised, and for\u00adgot\u00adten. It exists some\u00adwhere between inten\u00adtion and dis\u00adtrac\u00adtion.<\/p>
