On lost places, and why we can\u00adnot quite leave them alone<\/em><\/p>\n

There is a par\u00adtic\u00adu\u00adlar qual\u00adi\u00adty of light inside a build\u00ading that has been left to itself for decades. It comes in at wrong angles, through win\u00addows half-blocked by ivy or cracked into frost\u00aded obscu\u00adri\u00adty, and it falls on things \u2014 a child\u2019s shoe, a cal\u00aden\u00addar frozen in 1987, a grand piano dis\u00adsolv\u00ading slow\u00adly into the floor\u00adboards \u2014 with a kind of indif\u00adfer\u00adent grace. No one arranged this. No one is main\u00adtain\u00ading the effect. And yet it stops you where you stand.<\/p>\n\n

This is, per\u00adhaps, the begin\u00adning of an answer to why lost places exert the pull they do. We are sur\u00adround\u00aded, most of our lives, by spaces that are meant<\/em> \u2014 designed, curat\u00aded, explained. The aban\u00addoned resists all that. It sim\u00adply is<\/em>, in a state that was nev\u00ader intend\u00aded, accu\u00admu\u00adlat\u00ading atmos\u00adphere the way old wood accu\u00admu\u00adlates rings. Whether there is some\u00adthing stranger at work \u2014 some residue of the lives once lived inside these walls, some\u00adthing that has not entire\u00adly dis\u00adpersed \u2014 is a ques\u00adtion prob\u00ada\u00adbly best left open. Not every\u00adthing that feels like a pres\u00adence needs to be ratio\u00adnalised away.<\/p>\n\n

Urban explor\u00aders, the self-styled urbex<\/em> com\u00admu\u00adni\u00adty, have built an entire sub\u00adcul\u00adture around the chase. They research obses\u00adsive\u00adly \u2014 cross-ref\u00ader\u00adenc\u00ading satel\u00adlite imagery, old munic\u00adi\u00adpal records, the mur\u00admured tips of oth\u00ader explor\u00aders \u2014 and then they go, often ille\u00adgal\u00adly, always care\u00adful\u00adly, into places that have been locked up or writ\u00adten off. Some trav\u00adel inter\u00adna\u00adtion\u00adal\u00adly for a sin\u00adgle build\u00ading. A decom\u00admis\u00adsioned Sovi\u00adet radar instal\u00adla\u00adtion in Latvia. A tuber\u00adcu\u00adlo\u00adsis sana\u00adto\u00adri\u00adum in the Japan\u00adese moun\u00adtains, its cor\u00adri\u00addors still lined with patient records. A hotel in the Con\u00adgolese jun\u00adgle, where the ball\u00adroom ceil\u00ading has become a hang\u00ading gar\u00adden. The lengths peo\u00adple go to are, by any ordi\u00adnary mea\u00adsure, unrea\u00adson\u00adable. But then, ordi\u00adnary mea\u00adsures were not real\u00adly designed with won\u00adder in mind.<\/p>\n\n

    • Kol\u00adman\u00adskop, Namib\u00adia<\/strong> \u2014  a dia\u00admond-rush town swal\u00adlowed to the win\u00addowsills by the advanc\u00ading Namib desert; rooms drift\u00aded with sand up to the ceil\u00ading cor\u00adnices<\/em><\/li>\n\n
    • Hashima Island, Japan<\/strong> \u2014  a con\u00adcrete off\u00adshore city, once the most dense\u00adly pop\u00adu\u00adlat\u00aded place on earth, sealed and left in 1974; the sea wind does the rest<\/em><\/li>\n\n
    • Buzludzha, Bul\u00adgar\u00adia<\/strong> \u2014  a vast com\u00admu\u00adnist mon\u00adu\u00adment on a moun\u00adtain\u00adtop, its mosaics peel\u00ading from the dome inte\u00adri\u00ador, marooned in cloud for much of the year<\/em><\/li>\n\n
    • The Salto Hotel, Colom\u00adbia<\/strong> \u2014  a belle \u00e9poque resort beside a water\u00adfall, con\u00advert\u00aded briefly to a psy\u00adchi\u00adatric facil\u00adi\u00adty, then sim\u00adply closed; the water\u00adfall con\u00adtin\u00adues regard\u00adless<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      What these places share is not ruin for its own sake, but a kind of sus\u00adpend\u00aded time \u2014 the sense that some\u00adthing was inter\u00adrupt\u00aded rather than con\u00adclud\u00aded. We are drawn, it seems, not to end\u00adings but to ellipses. To the ques\u00adtion mark at the end of a cor\u00adri\u00addor. To the stair\u00adcase that leads up to a door that no longer opens onto any\u00adthing you can name.<\/p>\n

      Per\u00adhaps we vis\u00adit lost places because the rest of the world is too thor\u00adough\u00adly explained.
